LEND A VOICE: NIGERIAN POLICE BRUTALITY MUST END!

I write this letter as a concerned Nigerian citizen longing to see a drastic change in her country's law enforcement arm. I believe the
IGP works tirelessly day and night to put an end to crimes and corruption in our dearly beloved country. His good works can not be over-emphasized. As you already know, NP is the principal law enforcement agency and has over 370,000 staff strength grouped into various commands. But how many of these recruits/staffs follow the due process of the law through and through and are well trained? This is primarily what i want to bring to your notice.

According to a popular saying, 'in a land filled with crime and corruption, everyone is a suspect' but does that go to mean that individuals don't get to exercise their human rights anymore? Is it proper to shoot at or beat up people found with nothing incriminating only because they are found outside an area in the early hours of the night? We've seen cases where the innocent is practically flogged with a machete or hit with the nozzle of a gun for doing absolutely nothing wrong! How does the IGP intend to curb the menace of police men actually victimizing individuals for their personal gains and going as far as planting incriminating evidences just to make sure a huge sum of money comes out of such victims? I refuse to believe that you are ignorant of these things and i also refuse to believe that you can not find a lasting solution to it.

Not all civilians are criminals and  if people can't walk freely and exercise their fundamental human rights in all areas of life, of what use then is this law enforcement? Have you not noticed that some of these recruits kill at will under the disguise of the law? Don't you think that a better enlightenment and training should be giving to them so as to help their job of sweeping 'criminals' not 'innocents' off the street? I believe you can help reshape the face of the Nigerian police and the bad name some of them bring to this agency based on their wrong attitude can be changed.

To my fellow Nigerians, if you have an idea or have witnessed or understand what i'm talking about, please lend a voice to the end of unnecessary brutality by the NP. Just type #EndPoliceBrutality in the comment box and be sure to share your stand in this matter.

  1. You're so right! There are numerous unaccounted cases similar to what you described in our country. #LendAVoice
